Switching to natural clothing sounds like an easy enough change until you look at swimsuit options. Swimsuits are usually made of all things plastic and stretchy: nylon, polyester, acrylic, lycra, & everything toxic. They’re also usually made to wear just for a season or two. After saltwater, chlorine, and sun, synthetic fabric suits get stretched out and those little clear stretchy threads that look like tiny plastic worms start peeking out before you know it.

Also utilizing the revolutionary Econyl® in their suits, Shapes in the Sand employs a waterless, sustainable printing process that does not require the use of any harsh chemicals. Their dye testing and application process used the following materials: hemp, silk fabric, indigo dye, a stainless steel pot, a steamer made of bamboo, jute twine, eucalyptus leaves, vinegar, and mordant. Shapes in the Sand is also a business member of the Australian Marine Conservation Society and makes a monthly donation that aids the protection of endangered habitats. Draw a heart in the sand, because we’re in love.

Vitamin A developed a recycled nylon fabric know as EcoLux™, and combined with a longer lasting stretch from Lycra Xtra Life® fibers, produce swimsuits that outlast their competition. They use sustainable linen in their beach wear and use a waterless digital printing method. Vitamin A works exclusively with factories that conserve water and energy and donates a percentage of their profits to environmental organizations.

Already implementing ethical practices and sustainable printing processes, Aurai Swimwear has announced the use of Econyl® in their 2018 line. We couldn’t be more excited to see what they come out with using the post-consumer recycled nylon, because their suits are gorgeous. They also partner with some phenomenal sustainable and ethical brands like super soft Turkish towels from Izzy and Jean Co and beautiful beach bags from Wachila.

Manakai

Manakai is a truly inspirational swimwear brand with a killer style influence straight out of Maui. Manakai is utilizing a recycled nylon from Italian companies Carvico and Econyl®. All manufacturing is done in the USA with companies that employ ethical standards and ensure livable wages for workers. The nylon generated (Econyl®) is made from 100% recycled nylon from fishnet and other waste sources, uses 1/3 of the energy to produce, reduces water and crude oil consumption, reduces environmental contamination, and recovers nylon waste from the environment. Manakai’s suits also offer UV protection, so you can have fun in the sun all day long.
